This weekend I photographed a very talented musician by the name of Tolis Zavaliaris.
Tolis is currently band leader for Tolis Zavaliaris Project and teacher at the London Institute of Contemporary Music. Originally from Greece Tolis Zavaliaris has been performing throughout U.K and Greece for more than ten years. Tolis is an experienced session guitarist/song writer/producer, and he has worked with some of the top producers in London such as Peter Greenwall (Flop-Star), Benny D(Depeche Mode), John Robertson (Morcheeba), David Crefield (Kaiser Chiefs) to name but a few.
Tolis’s unique sound and versatility blends influences from rock and modern jazz/fusion to Eastern European music. Tolis also works as a guitarist with world famous violinist Vanessa Mae. As part of Tolis’s schedule he also contributes to Guitar Techniques and All Out Guitar Magazines.
Tolis has recorded two CDs as a leader “Sounds from the Past” (2007) and his new release “II” (2009) which features Pete Lockett(Steve Smith) on tabla, Laurence Cottle(Eric Clapton) on bass, Neil Angilley(Shirley Bassey) on piano, Fergus Gerrand(Madonna) on percussion Beruz Game(XFactor) on vocals and many more great musicians. For the moment enjoy a small preview of the albums.
For this shoot we used Tolis’ living room as well as a small roof top terrace of his London home. The lighting that was used for the shoot was very simple. One light (SB-80DX) fired either through a softbox, or 20 degree grid spot by my trusted pocket wizards.
I enjoyed working with Tolis. He was very chilled, relaxed and open to trying out different shooting angles and ideas! Here are a selection of the images that I took. The post production in these is simple. I ran them through lightroom, and added high pass in photoshop, with soft light as the blend mode.
